  • Introduction to the course

    Short introduction into a great presentation: the 5 Rules 

    1) Don’t Make a Presentation – Tell the Story;

    2) Catch & Hold the Attention;

    3) Help them visualize your message: the power of visuals

    Class Reading: Anime Tourism

    Activity: Make “4 slides” and talk about your experience (in a TED styled talk in under 4 minutes)

    If time allows: after small-group presentations, we will select 3-4 students to present in front of the class. 

  • Print-out, read, highlight and bring the following article to class (Missed it? You missed 10 points. Sorry)

    Reading: School rules in Japan offer harsh lessons in mindless assimilation

    Activity: Prepare a 4 minute presentation of the school rules back in your high-school (Follow the rules: (1) Story (2) Visual (3) Engage the Audience (4) Surprise). Print out your slides or draw them by hand or bring and share some photos of your high-school days for maximum effect.

    Prepare well: after small-group presentations, we will select 3-4 students to present in front of the class.

    Activity: Make a 4 minute presentation of your sleeping routines (Follow the rules: (1) Story (2) Visual (3) Engage the Audience (4) Surprise). Prepare well: after small-group presentations, we will select 3-4 students to present in front of the class. 

  • Please prepare your Marshmallow challenge presentation on A4 paper (What have you learnt from this activity? What does your structure mean? Why is this topic important?). Use the photos of your Marshmallow structure (if possible).

  • Please, download this file (List of Academic Presentation Topics) and select 2 topics that you want to make your presentations on.

    1st topic is for first (drill) presentation on December 17  

    2nd topic is for your final presentation (We will make the schedule on December 3rd).

    Please use these templates for setting up the structure of your research and use these convenient templates to present your ideas. FOR DETAILS, click “Week 10 – December 17” section below.

  • Lecture on how to make an effective academic presentation of the argument:

    1. Structure of the presentation;
    2. Key ‘convenience’ terms to use during academic presentations;
    3. Drills & Activity.
  • Please prepare your first (drill) presentation. (NO PPT EQUIPMENT WILL BE USED, so please bring your PC or print your slides on paper large enough for your group to see your presentation).

    Duration 5-7 minutes. Simple Reading of your presentation is not recommended.

    THE STRUCTURE OF ACADEMIC (FINDING or ARGUMENT-BASED) PRESENTATION:

    1. Introduce the problem / ongoing debate (10% of time)Find and read at least 3-4 articles and other credible sources. Don’t cite popular blogs or just Wikipedia.
    2. State your position clearly in 1-2 sentences (See templates) (5% of time)
    3. Introduce opposing / alternative views – Provide at least 3 arguments representing the other side of the debate). Use templates (20% of time)
    4. Introduce your counter-arguments and provide at least 3 evidences (cite credible sources) that support your position. Use templates (60% of time)
    5. Before closing your presentation, once again re-state your position.  (5% of time)

    In addition to these, remember that you MUST always keep in mind the KEYS TO A SUCCESSFUL PRESENTATION:

    1. Tell some story. Listeners like stories (especially personal stories and experiences!)
    2. Engage your audience (Ask them questions, etc).
    3. Put less words on slides and show good visuals that help to support your message (don’t overdo!). Photos and images that your took and people can recognize them – are very effective!
    4. Remember about physical message: your voice, your posture, your eye contact, your positive attitude and smile. (Without these, even if your content is interesting, people won’t pay much attention to your presentation).
